Despite what the regular season standings said, there wasn’t much discrepancy between the four teams of the Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League on Sunday.

The post-season officially began at Jubilee Field, with the top-seeded West Side Monarchs (14-9) edged the Wing’n It Marlins 2-1 (7-16) in Game 1 of that best-of-five semifinal series.

Braden Lockyer recorded a run and an RBI in a 1-for-3 effort for the victors, with Steven Sheppard picked up an RBI in a 1-for-3 outing.

Josh Oake scored for the Marlins while going 2-for-3.

Travis Taylor’s seven-inning appearance ended up in a W, as he allowed one run on five hits, with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Matt Colbourne was a tough-luck loser, suffering the defeat despite only surrendering two hits all game. He gave up both runs (one earned) while striking out nine and walking two.

In the evening game, the second-seeded Veitch Wellness Aces (13-11) eked out a 3-2 extra-inning win over the third-place Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks (13-11) in a series that was expected to be a close one between two teams with identical records.

Steve Hynes was large at the plate for the Aces, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Ryan Park, Greg Myrden, and Nick Park all went 2-for-4. Nick Park scored and drove in another.

Darren Colbourne was 3-for-4 in the loss, scoring a run. Fred Prosper also crossed the plate in a 2-for-5 night.

Michael Tavenor gave up 11 hits over eight innings, with two runs against. He walked four and struck out six in the win.

Frank Humber’s night ended with a loss after allowing three runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts over seven innings.
