Veitch's Ultramar Hawks pitcher Frank Humber throws one down the line during the opening game of senior baseball league at Jubilee Field Sunday.

Frank Humber is proof age is only a number.

The seasoned 40-something veteran was in true form Sunday as he tossed a complete game to lead the Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks to a 2-1 victory over the West Side Monarchs.

The showdown marked the season opener for the Corner Brook  Senior Baseball League at Jubilee Field on a sunny afternoon in Corner Brook.

Humber gave up an earned run on four hits and never issued a walk in a solid pitching effort for the Hawks over seven innings.

The crafty southpaw picked up seven strikeouts along the way as he mixed speeds with batterymate Darren Colbourne behind the plate.

Michael Tavenor took the pitching loss for the black and gold after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in three innings before being replaced by Adam Warren.

The Hawks scored two runs in the home half of the first inning when Mike Brake stroked a double that scored Fred Prosper and Mike Simms.

Humber’s only blemish came in the top of the fifth inning as Tavenor scored on Jon Wheeler’s single to put the Monarchs on the scoresheet.

Warren scattered two hits and two walks over three inning to keep the Monarchs within striking distance.

Brake was the top hitter for the Hawks going 2-for-3 with a two-run double, while Simms was went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Wheeler was the offensive star for the Monarchs going 1-for-3 with the team’s only RBI.

A summary of the league’s second game Sunday wasn’t available at press time. League action resumes Tuesday with the Supplement Shack Junior Barons taking on the Curling Marlins 7 p.m. at Jubilee Field.
