Mullins Memorial baseball tournament goes ahead despite rain

The rainy weather couldn’t stop the Corner Brook Baseball Association from hosting the 14th annual Joe Mullins Memorial Baseball Tournament on Saturday at Jubilee Field.

This year, for the first time ever, the tournament was an elementary school affair and, also for the first time, included an all-female division. The rain did damper things slightly, as only 10 of the 18 scheduled games were played.

In the boys side, J.J. Curling finished with a perfect 2-0 record, with both C.C. Loughlin and both Pasadena Elementary squads 1 and 2 ending up at 1-1. Sacred Heart wrapped up at 0-2.

In action between Pasadena 2 and Sacred Heart, the Pasadena club won 16-12.

Ryan Mercer had four hits and scored once for Pasadena, while Gavin Caines had three hits and scored three times.

Jacob Staples and Jaden Langer each collected four hits for Sacred Heart.

Unfortunately, the wet weather destroyed the other scoresheets from the boys division, but scores from the other games were: J.J. Curling 15, C.C. Loughlin1 14; C.C. Loughlin2 18, Sacred Heart 16; C.C. Loughlin1 13, Pasadena1 9; J.J. Curling 12, C.C. Loughlin2 4; and Pasadena1 10, Pasadena2 9.

In girls’ action, St. Peter’s Academy 2 and J.J. Curling were both 2-0, followed by C.C. Loughlin and St. Peter’s Academy 1, who were both 0-2.

St. Peter’s 2 earned a come-from-behind victory over C.C. Loughlin by a score of 15-14 after scoring six times during their last at-bat. Olivia Porter, who hit the three-run game-winning double, finished the game with four hits and three runs scored. Emily O’Quinn, Emily White and Mandy Hynes each picked up five hits.

For C.C. Loughlin, Sarah Power mustered four hits, while Ella Tucker had three. Tucker scored two runs.

In another game, St. Peter’s 2 defeated St. Peter’s 1 by a 15-10 count.

Alicia Osmond had four hits for J.J. Curling, while Allie Brake had three hits and scored three times.

In another game, J.J. Curling defeated St. Peter’s 1 by a 10-5 score. Maddy Mollon and Kendall Power each had three hits in the win.
