Bruce finishes in second place among men at provincial amateur golf championship

In what would be considered to be ideal weather conditions for golf in Newfoundland and Labrador at the final round of the 2018 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships on Wednesday, Janet Mills of Bally Haly Country Club recorded an 81 for the low round of the day in the ladies division to capture the ladies amateur, mid-amateur and senior titles with a three-day total of 254.

While Mills claimed the amateur crown, Allison Crawford of Baly Haly Country Club carded an 83 for a three-day total of 259 to clinch second place in the amateur division, three strokes ahead of first time competitor Taylor Cormier of Blomidon Golf Club. Cormier recorded at 89 on the final day of competition to secure third place.

Crawford also placed second in the mid-amateur division by eight strokes over Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links. Mills win in the senior division was impressive as she won the title by 10 strokes over super senior champion Linda Webber with Sherilyn Beaton of Clovelly recording a three-day total of 266 to claim third place.

Blair Bursey of Gander Golf Club eagled the second hold on his way to carding a one under par 69 to claim the amateur championship for the second time in three years. Andrew Bruce of Humber Valley Resort shot a 76 for a three-day total of 222, good for second place. The highlight of the day was two playoff rounds between Matthew Woodland from Bally Haly Country Club and Nikashantess Penashue of Amaruk Golf Club to determine the mid-amateur championship and the other playoff, for third place in the amateur division.

Penashue won both playoffs capturing with mid-amateur title and third place position on the amateur team with a three-day total of 226. Woodland who was tied for the lead heading into the final round carded a 78 while Penashue recorded a 75 for force the tiebreaker. Michael Tibbo of Bally Haly Country Club placed third with a three-day total of 229.

In the senior men's division, Chuck Conley of Bally Haly recorded a 76 for a three-day total of 231 to capture the senior division title. 2017 senior champion George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside Links placed second just three strokes behind Conley. Eddie Bearns defeated fellow club member Don Boland in a second hole playoff for third place.

During the ladies awards ceremonies, interim general manager of Bally Haly Country Club, Kurt Schoenberg was presented with a small token of appreciation for hosting the champions and acknowledged the work of Danny O'Neill in coordinating the volunteers to assist with pace of play, forecaddies, scoring and starting.

It was also announced the 2019 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships will be held at Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook from July 11th to 14th.
