The defending champion St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians (16-4-3) clinched first place over the weekend with a pair of wins — 4-0 Sunday and 2-1 Saturday — over the visiting C.B.S. That Pro Look Strikers, while the Holy Cross Kirby Group Crusaders (12-5-5) will finish second after playing to a 1-1 tie with the Mount Pearl First Choice Haircutters Sunday.
If Mount Pearl (11-5-6) had won, it would have moved into second place and forced Holy Cross to win the last remaining game on the regular-season schedule, which comes Wednesday at King George V Park, where the Crusaders takes on Feildians Ernst and Young.
But Sunday’s draws mean Holy Cross remains a point ahead of Mount Pearl, which has completed its 23-game schedule and will finish in third place.
Feildians (9-8-6) secured the fourth and final playoff berth by blanking visiting Corner Brook Steers Insurance United 4-0 Sunday. That and C.B.S.’s losses knocked the Strikers (7-12-4) out of the picture for the playoffs, which will be held over the Labour Day weekend.
A Page playoff format will be used, with the Laurentians taking on Holy Cross and the winner advancing directly to the final. The loser of that 1-2 game will get a second chance in the semifinal, where it will face the winner of the 3-4 game between Mount Pearl and Feildians.
The Laurentians defeated Mount Pearl in last year’s championship final.
