Chaulk in second in men’s amateur division; Gillam in second among women at provincial amateur golf championships


Despite starting the day under dense fog cover, day 1 of the 2017 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships at The Wilds Golf Resort provided some record-setting golf.

Mike Furlong of Bally Haly Country Club leads the men's amateur division, recording a three-under par 69 to tie the course record and hold down top position.

Heading into day two, Furlong holds a four-stroke lead over 2016 senior champion Chuck Conley and Nikshantess Penashue who are tied, one stroke ahead of Golf NL Hall of Famer George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside Links.

In the women's divisions, Bally Haly Country Club members Janet Mills and Gale Roberts carded an 84 to tie for the lead in the amateur, mid-amateur and senior divisions, with a two-stroke lead over Judy Gillam of Humber Valley Resort. Gillam, the defending super senior champion recorded an 86 to lead that division by eight strokes over Linda Webber of Bally Haly Country Club. Rounding out the top three in the super senior division is Bobbie Boland of Pitcher's Pond Golf Course with a score of 105.

In the men's mid-amateur division, Furlong has the four-stroke lead over defending champion Conley who recorded a 73 and is one stroke ahead of Chaulk. In the senior men's division, Conley is looking to retain his title and holds a one-stroke lead over Chaulk. Eddie Bearns of Bally Haly carded a 77 to hold down third place.

In the super senior division, Johnnie Williams and Andrew Hynes of Clovelly are tied for the lead recording a seven-over par 79, followed closely by 2016 champion Don Boland of Bally Haly Country Club, who is three strokes off the pace heading into the second day of competition.

Round 2 goes Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m.
