Under overcast but warm conditions and despite heavy rains overnight, players were treated to ideal course conditions during the first day of competition at the 2017 Royal LePage Provincial Junior Championships at the Grande Meadows Golf Course in Frenchman's Cove on the Burin Peninsula on Monday.

In the girls junior division, Taylor Cormier of Blomidon Golf Club recorded an 88 to hold a five-stroke lead over 2016 juvenile champion Paige Hickey of Blomidon.

Megan Colbourne, also from Blomidon Golf Club, rounds out the top three, carding a 105 — 17 strokes off the pace heading into Day 2 of competition.

In the junior boys division, 2016 runner-up Andrew Bruce of Humber Valley Resort recorded a one-over par 73 to hold a two-stroke lead over Michael Simms of Clovelly.

Blomidon Golf Club member Matthew Bonnell holds down third position with a five-over par 77 to put him four strokes from the leader.

In the boys juvenile division, Simms carded a 75 and has a three-stroke lead over Ethan Efford of Clovelly. Last year's bantam division winner Alex Dolomount of Bally Haly Country Club is tied for third with two other competitors including fellow club member Patrick Rice and Nathan Young of Clovelly with scores of 84 and six strokes behind Efford.

Efford holds the lead in the bantam division by six strokes over Nathan Young, with Joseph Cluney of Blomidon Golf Club rounding out the top three in the division, recording a first-round total of 95.

Round 2 is set for 9 a.m. this morning.
