Corner Brook is producing some pretty good basketball players on this side of the island.

Corner Brook Intermediate won gold in both the 2018 West Coast Provincial Grade 9 A Boys Basketball Tournament and West Coast Provincial Grade 9 A Girls Basketball Tournament on two different fronts over the weekend.

The male team from CBI claimed the championship banner by virtue of a 50-38 win over the host Templeton Academy Tigers Saturday in Meadows.

Keegan Piercey, selected the tournament Most Valuable Player, drained 16 points to lead the charge for the victors in the final showdown.

Brad Sheppard supported the offensive punch with a 10-point game at the Templeton Academy gymnasium.

Kurtis White of the Tigers got the nod as the top defensive player of the tournament for his effort in shutting down some pretty good shooters from the opposing teams throughout the tournament.

The city squad earned a berth in the championship final by downing St. Paul’s Intermediate of Gander 48-37 in one of two semifinal showdowns.

Scott Woolfrey was the top gun for the winners with a 14-point performance, while benchmate James Adey threw in 10 points to seal the deal.

The CBI female squad, led by tournament MVP Laura Taylor, hoisted the championship banner on the female side at Xavier Junior High in Deer Lake by defeating Exploits Valley Intermediate 45-25 in the championship final.
