Matt Colbourne will be out of the lineup for the Corner Brook Royals for an indefinite period of time after injuring his knee against the Stephenville Jets Saturday night.
Colbourne, the lanky six-foot-three winger, fell awkwardly during a rush up the ice in the first period and required assistance to get off the ice. His kneecap popped out and immediately popped back into place before he finished falling to the ice. But when it did it a piece of his kneecap was chipped in the process.
“So right now there’s a piece of kneecap floating around somewhere,” Colbourne said with a light chuckle despite being in obvious discomfort Monday morning.
Colbourne expects to learn more about his situation when he sees an orthopedic surgeon later this week. He expects the surgeon will take a closer look and have a keener sense of what’s going on once he or she does so.
Colbourne got his knee checked out at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Saturday night. His knee is in a splint and he has crutches to get around because he’s basically working off one leg right now.
It’s one thing knowing he will miss some hockey, but the misery of having to depend on others for the simplest things while he’s hurting has him somewhat annoyed though.
“I need somebody to help me put my socks on in the morning and all that nonsense, and I need help putting on clothes so it’s rough,” he said.
He plans on resting and following doctor’s orders. The good news for him and the Royals is that the West Coast Senior Hockey League is now on Christmas break with no hockey scheduled until early January.
