The Corner Brook Royals want to give back to the community that supported the organization in the West Coast Senior Hockey League.
The Corner Brook Senior Hockey Association Inc., the group behind the Royals return to senior hockey, is inviting proposals for funding from interested sports organizations who would look to be a recipient of one of six grants — a maximum value of $5,000 per successful proposal — to be handed out this summer.
Royals president Dennis Waterman said his organization had decided when it got back in the senior hockey game that any money left over after the operating expenses for the following season had been secured would be given back to the community through funding provided to various sports groups.
The money isn’t only available to minor hockey groups in the Corner Brook and Massey Drive area. The Royals wanted to make sure all minor sports groups had a chance to benefit from the funding since the team has great fan support from every sports group in the area.
The Royals had great fan support in its return and Waterman said the fans and corporate sponsors who stuck behind the team deserve to be recognized for their support and know the organization appreciates them.
“Nobody’s ever done anything like that before so we figured it’s a way to give back to the community for all the support we received,” Waterman said.
Proposals, which are due July 15 and have to be submitted to league secretary Mike Luedee, must be specific in detailing the use of funds and should also include a statement of potential positive impact such financial assistance will provide to the respective minor sports group.
The funding proposal could include a desire for money to help towards specific projects focused on improving or upgrading a particular sports venue or help assist with registration fees for children who may require such assistance in order to participate in a respective sports program. Funding could also be provided based upon provision of equipment to facilitate individual or specific team needs for competition and any other proposal involving the development and promotion of minor sports could be given consideration.
Proposals should be submitted to [email protected] by the deadline. A three-person committee will evaluate and rank all proposals before bringing their findings back to the entire executive to decide which groups will receive money.
Waterman expects a decision on where the money will go will happen before the end of August.
