Davis, a native of Corner Brook, is a competitive curler and golfer who has represented her hometown and her province at major events in both sports over the years.
She’s back on the golf course this year after taking a one-year hiatus to spend time with her husband Cal who has been sick for some time now.
Davis will be competing in the senior women’s bracket at the 2017 Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur and Senior Golf Championships next week at Humber Valley Resort Golf Course.
Davis returned to the fairways this summer with a new perspective on life. She has been hitting the links 3-4 times every week to get back in a groove and believes she’s been hitting the ball as good as she’s had in years so she’s looking forward to seeing how she stacks up against some of the best seasoned golfers from coast to coast.
She wasn’t going to entertain a return to competitive golf this summer and offered to volunteer for the event, but then it hit her that she shouldn’t pass up a chance to play in a major championship when she never knows if the chance will arise again and her 12 handicap was good enough for her to qualify for the championship without being a member of the provincial team.
“I love golf. I love sports and I love competitive sports,” Davis said Thursday from Blomidon Golf and Country Club in Corner Brook where she is a member.
The practice round is scheduled for Monday and then there will be days of action where participants will try to make the cut for the final round slated for Thursday. She has to be in the top 70 (plus ties) to be putting on the final day so she’s just going to forge ahead and see what happens, knowing she has scored as low as 78 on the Humber Valley Resort course in the past.
“I’ve been hitting the ball really well and probably better than I have in a long time, so I as long as I can keep my head in the game I will do fine,” she said. “I just want to do my personal best. There’s going to be ladies there shooting in the 60s, they are that good.”
She has shared the national women’s golf spotlight on two previous occasions — amateur nationals in Nova Scotia and seniors in British Columbia — so she will be looking forward to rubbing shoulders with some great people she has missed over the years.
“I met some beautiful people there and I’m really looking forward to meeting them again,” she said.
It will be great to be on fairways in a fun atmosphere with some great company testing her mettle, but her husband Cal is going to be her caddie for the tournament and that brings out her infectious smile without any effort.
“That means a lot to me to have him there. He’s kind of my rock when it comes to golf and life.”
