Chaulk, Gillam in the mix at provincial golf championships


For the second consecutive day, competition at the 2017 Royal LePage Amateur Championships at The Wilds Golf Resort was delayed for 40 minutes while the dense fog lifted. Once play begin, competitors were treated to excellent weather conditions and a fast-paced round.

Mike Furlong of Bally Haly Country Club carded a three-over par 75 in the men's amateur and mid-amateur divisions to extend his lead to seven strokes over second place Jaron Flynn of Bally Haly Country Club who recorded a 76 to move into second position. Chuck Conley of Bally Haly, Nikashantess Penashue from Amaruk and George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside Links are tied for third with a two-day total of 153 and nine strokes off the pace.

In the women's divisions, Judy Gillam of Humber Valley Resort carded an 81 for a two-day total of 167 to take the lead in the amateur, mid-amateur and senior divisions, with a two-stroke lead over first-round leader Janet Mills of Bally Haly Country Club. Mills recorded a second-round 85 for a two-day total of 169 and a five-stroke lead over fellow club member and round one co-leader Gale Roberts.

Gillam increased her lead in the super senior division to 24 strokes over second-place Linda Webber of Bally Haly Country Club, who recorded a two-day total of 191. Bobbie Boland of Pitcher's Pond Golf Course remains in third place with a total score of 203.

In the senior men's division, defending champion Conley and Chaulk are tied for first with a two-day total of 153, while Don Boland and Eddie Bearns of Bally Haly sit tied for third just two strokes off the co-leaders.

In the super senior division, Don Boland recorded the low score of the day, a 73, to move into sole possession of first place and a five-stroke lead over Andrew Hynes of Clovelly, who carded an 81. Johnnie Williams of Clovelly dropped to third place with a two-day total of 162 and seven strokes from the leader heading into the final round of competition.

The final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. today.
