Trading punches in the boxing ring for the first time isn’t a big deal for Logan Alcock.

The 21-year-old native of Grand Falls-Windsor has had a flare for martial arts all of his life.

He was involved with jui jitsui and kickboxing for a number of years in central Newfoundland, but his experience in the ring has been limited to just a handful of exhibition matches in kickboxing.

Now he’s ready to test his mettle in the boxing ring.

Alcock will make his boxing debut Saturday night at the Reid Centre in Mount Pearl when he squares off with Steve Oates of St. John’s in a 195-pound weight class bout.

“‘I’ve been fighting since I was a kid,” Alcock said earlier this week from his hometown.

He’s not nervous about getting in the ring. He believes he’s in good shape heading into the fight and figures his hard work over the past year should pay dividends.

He has been doing a fair amount of sparring with a couple of buddies at home, but for the past two months he made the commitment to train with Jeff Brake at Brake’s Gym in Corner Brook by driving to Corner Brook once a week.

Alcock will be attending his first year of studies in environmental science at Grenfell Campus in the fall of this year. He was pretty excited when a few training partners told him about a kickboxing gym in Corner Brook and he immediately formed a friendship with Brake. He believes time spent under the watchful eye of Brake will help him in his debut.

He has no fear. He just wants to fight and whatever happens he will live with it because that’s all he really can do.

“The worst-case scenario is I get knocked out,” he said.

He’s never been knocked out before. He knows it’s possible but that’s the furthest thing from his mind because he’s just excited about an opportunity to get in the ring and find out if he has what it takes to be a boxer.
