The Corner Brook Senior Baseball League season got underway at Jubilee Field on Sunday that saw a rematch of last year’s final between the Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks and the West Side Monarchs.

Unlike last year, when the Monarchs won the championship in a surprising series sweep, the Hawks prevailed this time around, by a score of 7-3.

Mike Simms got his season off to a solid start with two RBIs and a run scored in a 3-for-5 outing overall. Fred Prosper chipped in a run and an RBI while going 1-for-1.

Travis Taylor was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss, while Matt Prosper went 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Frank Humber pitched five innings for the win, allowing three runs on four hits, with a strikeout. Aaron Purcell Pilgrim earned the save in two innings of work that saw him strike out three and walk one.

Kevin Farrell took the loss in 4.2 innings pitched in which he gave up five runs — two earned — on nine hits, with two strikeouts and five walks. Ryan Park came in for 2.1 innings, striking out five batters and giving up an earned run on three hits, with a walk.

In the later game on Sunday, the Wing’n It Marlins took down the Veitch Wellness Aces 11-6.

Matt Wells led the way for the Marlins with three runs scored and an RBI, while posting a 3-for-4 night at the plate.

Aces’ David Hardy answered with a 2-for-4 effort that saw him score twice and drive in another.

Matt Colbourne picked up the win in a three-inning appearance on the mound. He gave up one run on three hits, and struck out eight. He walked a pair.

Five pitchers got the ball at various points for the Aces, but Brad Greene took the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.
