Seven different players got into the goalscoring summary for the McHugh’s RiverDogz on Sunday night.
The RiverDogz upended Macavery’s 7-1 in Corner Brook Molson Men’s Ball Hockey League action at the Kinsmen Arena II, thanks to single markers from Mickey Lushman, Andrew Burden, Gordo Scott, Dylan Revels, Leslie Pennell, Robbie Greene and Russell Hardy.
Josh Skinner provided the only goal for the losing side.
Ricky Lushman recorded the goaltending victory over Adam Hicks.
Burden, the team captain, said he believes the victory was an example of what the club is capable of when everyone is on the same page.
“When we’ve got our bodies, we seem to roll together pretty good,” he said. “We’ve been having trouble with that all year, but it seems like the team is starting to settle down and come together.
“Hopefully as the year progresses we’ll keep improving.”
Macavery’s actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:29 of the opening period, when Skinner scored from Ian Skinner and Chad Pennell.
The advantage was brief.
Mickey Lushman evened it up just 16 seconds later, with Leslie Pennell and Greg White drawing the assists.
Burden then put his team ahead by one with 1:39 remaining in the half. Mickey Lushman assisted on the play. The first half was close, but the second half started to get a little ugly on the scoreboard.
Scott made it a 3-1 game at 12:08 of the period, from Burden and Craig McCarthy.
Then Revels struck at 10:51, from Mark Gilliam and Greene, to put his side ahead by three.
The score remained unchanged then until the 3:51 mark, when Leslie Pennell buried one to put the RiverDogz up 5-1.
Greene scored moments later, at 4:16, to increase the lead even further. Mickey Lushman and Leslie Pennell recorded the helpers.
Then, at 2:50, RiverDogz defenceman Hardy closed out the scoring. Scott assisted on the play.
Hardy is a player Burden singled out specifically after the game as a key addition to the team this season.
“He’s been playing awesome, he’s got a big shot from the point,” he said. “He’s a smart player.”
He also said the team is expecting Steve Hickey to get in the lineup soon, which will further aid their chances.
“He’s going to be a big addition too,” said Burden.
But, more than anyone else, Burden said goaltender Ricky Lushman deserves most of the credit for any success the team enjoys.
“Our goaltending is spectacular,” he said. “He was the top goalie of the year last year and he’s just that much better for us this year.”
