The only took one of three games from the Tricom Thunder over the weekend, but the Western Kings already had first place locked up regardless.
The Thunder, however, took over second place in the five-team provincial bantam AAA hockey league with their strong performance.
On Sunday, the Thunder edged the Kings 5-4 at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, thanks to a scoring-by-committee approach. Goals came from Alex Dody, Ryan Greene, Kieran Burke, Alex French and Nick Moore.
Mark Hillier (2), Jacob Oake and Jesse Hickey replied in the loss.
On Saturday night, Hillier, Hickey, Oake, Brady Parsons, Lucas Robinson and Mark Randell all found the back of the net as the Kings took the second game of the three-game set 6-2.
Goalscorers for the Thunder were unavailable at press time.
On Saturday morning, French, Moore and Nathan Kelly struck for the Thunder in a 3-1 victory.
Hillier was the lone marksman for the Kings.
The Kings finished the regular season with 46 points, while the Thunder had 41 and St. John’s amassed 38. Central and Tri-Pen have 11 and five points, respectively, with two games remaining for each.
The Kings will host fourth-place Central next weekend for the best-of-three semifinal round.
