Barry is part of a small group of people attempting to bring hockey back to Stephenville in the form of a four-team, locals-only west coast senior hockey league. He said 26 players showed up to Thursday night’s meeting to declare their intention to try out for the Jets, while members of the business community also attended to gauge exactly what was going on.
“We want to do it right, and we had a lot of questions thrown our way,” Barry said. “But overall, it was very positive.”
Barry figures the timing of the meeting probably even worked against them, as he said if it was held after the holiday season, they “could’ve probably filled the whole room.”
The next step for the group now is a meeting on Sunday in Corner Brook with a group from the city and from Deer Lake, with a possibility of a group from Port aux Basques also making the trip.
Once the intentions of everyone present are known, plans can move forward again, Barry hopes.
He wouldn’t even rule out the possibility, if all goes well, of a league starting this winter.
“We could be open to a short schedule to show people what we’ve got here,” he said.
