The dasherboards have been installed, glass for the boards have been ordered and lights will be installed over the next few weeks.

Things are taking shape for the Meadows community rink being built in the North Shore community. It’s a project the Meadows recreation committee, under president Jamie Brake, has been working on for the past three years.

It won’t be long before children in Meadows and other communities along the north shore of the Bay of Islands can really embrace an outdoor community rink.

The rink, located in the heart of the town, has a concrete surface measuring 125 feet x 65 feet. It will be home to hockey for people of all ages day and night once Mother Nature does her part, and during the summer months the recreation committee plans on keeping boys and girls active by offering a ball hockey and basketball program.

The project is volunteer driven and will cater to the needs of any child on the north shore even though it’s a project taken on by the Town of Meadows with financial funding in the amount of $300, 000 provided by the provincial government to make it become a reality.

Brake likes seeing children frequent the facility. That’s something he expects will take off once it starts. He’s impressed with how things are going and feels people will be impressed with the finished project.

“It’s going to be the real deal,” he said of the facility before noting he hopes the first game of hockey will take place early in 2015.
