Members of the Corner Brook Atom B Royals celebrate at Local 64 after hearing that the team had won a trip to Vancouver to watch an NHL game as winners of the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour’s Cheer Like Never Before contest Sunday night.

When Rogers Hometown Hockey visited Corner Brook back in late November it marked the beginning of a big opportunity for the Corner Brook Royals Atom B team, and they have seized the moment big time.

The Royals Atom B hockey team is the winner of the Rogers Hometown Hockey Cheer Like Never Before contest after being named one of the 24 national finalists, and will now be treated to an ultimate National Hockey League experience.

The team garnered the most votes — 13,693 votes out of approximately 60,000 cast across the country — in an online competition for their cheer called “Boom Chicka Boom.”

The coaching staff and parents held a team gathering for the boys Sunday night at Local 64 on Broadway as a team-buiding exercise and they all crowded around the television waiting for the winner to be announced on the final installment of this year’s Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour Sunday night.

Assistant coach Mark Lombard said the team wanted to have everybody together for the announcement just in case they were the winners. He figured they had a good shot at it because they had a strong campaign to get the Newfoundland and Labrador vote and the province responded in a big way.

“I don’t know if Club 64 has a roof on it anymore,” Lombard said Monday morning after admitting he was relieved it is over because a lot of volunteers put in a lot of work to make it happen. “We blew the roof of it last night after the announcement was made. You couldn’t even hear yourself thinking in there last night.”

The top prize includes a trip to Vancouver, B.C. to watch the Edmonton Oilers play the Vancouver Canucks on April 9, along with experiencing a Canucks game-day skate, a meet and greet with players and alumni, a chance to perform the cheer in the Canucks dressing room and a surprise equipment package from Bauer.
