The Deer Lake Red Wings will hold a public meeting Thursday 7:30 p.m. at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex in Deer Lake for the purpose of recruiting volunteers to step up and help put a competitive product on the ice for the West Coast Senior Hockey League.
League president Andy Brake said the three teams east of Deer Lake — the Corner Brook Royals, Stephenville Jets and Port aux Basques Mariners — are ready for what is expected to be a longer schedule than the 12-game shortened season league organizers used last year to revive senior hockey on the west coast.
Brake said the Red Wings will be looking to bring some new faces on board to help run the team, but the most important position to fill is the general manager’s role, which was held by Clyde Williams last winter. He’s no longer able to commit to the job because of personal reasons.
Brake said details like scheduling and the possibility of a player draft are key items teams will want to discuss before puck drop, but until there is a firm commitment from the Red Wings organization he doesn’t see the point in trying to address some of those items.
