St. John's -
The 12th annual Confederation Cup High School Hockey Invitational Tournament is set to be played in the metro St. John's area Feb. 4-7.
A total of 25 teams will challenge for two titles and all games will be played on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula. As in previous years, teams from Nova Scotia and from all areas Newfoundland and Labrador are participating in this prestigious event.
Championship schools will be presented with a beautiful local print to commemorate their winning and their team name will be inscribed on the Confederation Cup Trophy.
Academy Canada will again participate as a sponsor in this year's event and will present special wrist watches to the player judged to demonstrate top sportsmanship on each team.
"All previous tournaments have been extremely successful. Confederation Cup has an excellent group of volunteers, many of whom have been with it for a number of years and they have all played major roles in developing this annual competition," said tournament convenor Charlie Decker.
"It is because of the fine reputation that the tournament has earned, that many teams from within and from outside the province enter. The Confederation Cup's great reputation has resulted in the tournament being held in high esteem by high school teams." "
Each team will play a minimum of four games. Results will decide opponents and schedule in the playoff round.
The tournament format has two divisions: Tier 1 will have Sections A and B, while Tier 2 will consist of Sections C, D and E.
Play is set to begin Thursday and Friday afternoons at 3 p.m. and will continue into the evening, with morning starts Saturday. Championship games will be played Sunday, Feb. 7 at a time and facility to be announced.
The schedule and results will be available on the Confederation Cup Official webpage, www.academycanada.com.
