The strong play the Dennis GM Western Kings demonstrated all season in the provincial major midget hockey league continued as the playoffs began over the weekend.

The Kings are up 2-0 in their best-of-seven semifinal series over the Tripen Osprey at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

On Sunday, the Kings thumped the Osprey 9-1.

Andrew Antle recorded a natural hat trick in the win, while Skyler Coates (2), Lucas Robinson, Brayden Ryan, Malcolm Genge and Adrian Ward did the rest of the damage.

Mason Oates was the lone marksman in the loss.

Kirklin Young picked up the win in net, while Riley Petten was tagged with the loss. Petter was relieved by Mathew Chippett after the seventh goal.

On Saturday night, Kyle Robinson scored twice as the Kings cruised to a 7-1 win in the series opener.

Noah Legge, Jonathan Anderson, Kris Thomas, Adrian Ward and Brady Genge also found the back of the net.

Kyle Tetford struck for the Osprey.

Lucas Park earned the win between the pipes, with Petten suffering the defeat. Chippett replaced Petten after six goals.

The series shifts to Tripen for Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) next weekend.

The St. John’s Maple Leafs and East Coast Blizzard are knotted 1-1 after the opening two games of the other semifinal series.
