CORNER BROOK Two former Western Kings teammates could find themselves suiting up for the same team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League one of these days.
Kings graduate Brady Griffin-Hefford and Luke House — a lock for a goaltending job with the Kings for the 2014-2015 provincial major midget hockey league season — are among the Newfoundlanders to hear their names called at the 2014 Quebec Major Hockey League Entry Draft held recently in Sherbrooke, Que.
House, a six-foot-two southpaw puckstopper from Corner Brook, was chosen 55th overall in the third round by the Charlottetown Islanders, while Griffin-Hefford, a six-foot-two power forward who also hails from the city, was taken by the Islanders in the 13th round with the 223rd pick.
A total of seven Newfoundlanders, including Corner Brook’s Johnny Jones who has been living in Halifax, were among the prospects who heard their names called on draft day.
Jones,who has been honing his skills at a United States prep school for the past few years, was drafted 86th overall and a fifth-round pick of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
Jordan Maher, considered by many hockey pundits to be the best player in the Newfoundland major midget ranks last year when he led the Central Ice Pak to the provincial crown, was taken sixth overall by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
The list of players drafted included Jesse Sutton of the St. John’s Privateers (50th overall), Nicholas Roberts of the St. John’s Maple Leafs (188th overall) and Shayne Dominie of the Central Ice Pak (190th overall).
