Robbie Dunville, son of Hockey Hall of Famer Cal Dunville, scored the eventual game-winning goal 51 seconds into the second period as the Stephenville Jets improved to 2-0 in the West Coast Senior Hockey League with a 3-2 win over the Deer Lake Red Wings Friday night.
Brad Bennett and Mark McGuire scored for the Jets in the opening period to give the Jets a 2-0 lead.
The Red Wings, who now sit at 1-2 after its second loss to the Jets, got goals from Justin Compton and Ian Richardson in the second period, but there was no scoring in the third period as defence appeared to be the way both teams wanted to finish out this entertaining game at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex.
Royals, 8, Mariners 7
The Corner Brook Royals eked out an 8-7 victory over the Port aux Basques Mariners in a fast and physical showdown that saw seven goals scored in the third period as the home team roared back to pick up two points.
Matt Colbourne scored two goals, including the game-winning goal at 15:29 of the third period to the lead the Royals, while Johnny Jones and Jamie Penney also had two-goal games for the winning side.
Matt Roache and Tyler Hunt rounded out the scoring for the Royals.
The two teams were deadlocked at four goals apiece after two periods. Port aux Basques showed some jump in the early stages of the third with three unanswered goals, but then it was the Royals turn as they filled the net on four occasions to steal the win.
Jasper Dicks had a hat trick for the Mariners, while Dylan Savoury and Jody Kelly had two goals apiece in a losing cause.
