White was a member of the winning team, a perfect 7-0 record, at the inaugural Meadows 3-on-3 pond hockey tournament held on the outdoor rink in Meadows over the weekend.

Players ranging in age from 15 years old to seasoned veterans in their 60s and 70s enjoyed the clean, fresh air as the community came together for some fun and frolic with more than 30 games of hockey played Saturday and Sunday.

“Just skating on it brought back a lot of childhood memories,” White, who now lives in Corner Brook, said of the tournament hosted by the Meadows recreation committee.

White skated on the ponds in the Burgeo area when an outdoor rink was an instant hit with young boys and girls looking to have some fun. His hometown now has an enclosed arena with a cooling system.

He had a blast. He thought the ice held up well for so much hockey in a short period of time and credited rec committee chairperson Jamie Brake and his volunteer crew for a job well done.

It was a weekend that reminded him of how much fun an outdoor rink can provide to young people in today’s society when technology appears to rule most people’s leisure time.

Tyler Wells of Cox’s Cove, also a member of the winning team, couldn’t have had a better weekend if he tried.

He enjoyed a chance to play pond hockey, which is something he had never done before and he liked how people came out to watch the action and share in the festive atmosphere.

“It seemed like it was a complete community event,” Wells said.

Jamie Brake envisioned hosting a pond hockey tournament some five years ago when the dream of building a community rink became a project he decided to pursue. Seeing so many people shooting pucks around brought a smile to his face.

“It was above and beyond my expectations on how good it turned out,” Brake said. “It ran so smooth it was almost too good to be true, especially for a first-time event.”
