The punch occurred during the second period of a match between the Lewisporte Seahawks and a squad from Bell Island on April 19. The Seahawks team was made up of players from two local division A Midget teams — the Bishop’s Falls Express and the Seahawks.

Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) executive director Craig Tulk confirmed the player has received a 10 game suspension in a conversation with the Pilot May 3.

The Pilot also spoke with Brian Pardy, coach of the Seahawks squad. Pardy said he was unaware HNL had handed down the 10 game suspension, and had “no comment” on the incident.

The official Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) game report shows the punch resulted in a game misconduct penalty for the Seahawks player. It was not the only incident recorded during the game.

The report also shows another Seahawks player was penalized for misconduct in the third period for giving the “finger.” The report does not indicate to whom the gesture was directed.

The Lewisporte Minor Hockey Association for comment has not yet responded to a request for comment.

A previous version of this story referenced the Bantam team, when in fact it was the Midget team participating in the game. The Pilot apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused.
