An amateur league under the name of West Coast Senior Hockey League has been given the thumbs up by Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador, with four centres with a rich history committed to bringing the game back to the fans.
The Corner Brook Royals, Stephenville Jets, Deer Lake Red Wings and Port aux Basques Mariners will play an abbreviated 12-game schedule in March to set the tone for a full-fledged season beginning in the fall of this year.
Details are being worked out on a league constitution and bylaws, but league interim secretary Richard Dennis of Corner Brook confirmed Monday that all four teams will play a home-and-home series with the other centres during the month of March, with the top two teams squaring off in a one-game, winner-take-all showdown to declare a champion.
The Red Wings organization already held an open practice, at which 20 skaters and five goalies showed up for a skate, and the Corner Brook Royals will hold their first open workout Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at the Kinsmen Arena II in Corner Brook.
The Jets and Mariners are expected to schedule tryouts for their respective clubs later this week.
