Elwood High Lakers’ Jacob Bennett, left, with help from teammate Ethan Carroll, centre, takes the puck and skates away from Stephenville High Spartans’ George Young during high school hockey play at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex on Monday evening.

No surprise, considering the two Stephenville High Spartans players also suit up for the Western Kings of the already-underway provincial major midget hockey league.

On Monday night, their offensive talents — specifically, two goals apiece — powered the Spartans to a 6-2 victory over the Elwood High Lakers in the opening night of the West Coast High School Hockey League regular season at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex.

Brady Marche and Mark Anderson also lit the lamp in the winning effort.

Joshua Oake and Drew Langdon replied for the Lakers.

Both Drake’s goals came in the first period, before Marche struck to make it a 3-0 game by the first intermission.

Young picked up his first of the game about midway through the second, before the Lakers finally got on the board when Oake scored in the dying seconds of the frame.

Langdon pulled his side to within two goals with 11:07 left on the clock, but Young scored again, before Anderson iced it with just over a minute left to play.

Tristan Hynes earned the win in net over Kirklin Young.

In the other game on Monday night, the Corner Brook Regional High Titans blasted the St. James Regional High Saints 14-2.

Aaron Purcell-Pilgrim and Evan Gallant both had hat tricks, while Brent Eason, Matt Bonnell and Kirk Penney each notched a pair. Kyle George and Daniel O’Neill picked up single markers.

Jackson Butt and Ryan Osmond responded in the losing cause.

Tyler Bursey recorded the win in net, with Brady Aucoin and Jordan Pike sharing time in the Saints’ crease during the loss.
