Corner Brook -

There are those that think the Corner Brook Regional High Titans might as well be crowned champions of the West Coast High School Hockey League without even playing the final series.

Players on the Elwood High Lakers are obviously not among that group, at least if Game 1 of the best-of-five series is any indication.

The Titans won the opening game at the Kinsmen Arena II on Monday night, but only by a slim 3-1 margin, as the Lakers definitely gave them everything they could handle.

Grant Vincent, Eric Fisher and Brandon Wall struck for the Titans.

Jordan Ball replied for the Lakers.

Jacob Cluney earned the goaltending victory, while Luke Canning took the loss.

"We knew it was going to be close," said Titans captain Vincent. "They've been good competition all year. They've got really good goaltending and they've got a few forwards who have good shots, so they can put the puck in the net.

"It's going to be a good series, it'd be nice to get it done in three, but I don't know if it's going to happen that way," he continued. "I can see it going four or five."

Vincent doesn't feel the Titans need to stray too far from what led to their success in Game 1, despite the close result.

"We'll use the same game plan," he said of Game 2. "We'll drive the net and try to use our speed."
