Western opened by falling to eventual champions Tri Com Thunder 5-3 March 10. That was it for the Kings on Day 1 of the competition.
The team bounced back on Saturday with a pair of wins. The first came when the Kings doubled Tri Pen 6-3 to start the day, followed by a 3-0 decision over Central.
Facing a win-and-get-in situation the morning of the final tournament day, the Kings dropped a 5-2 decision to St. John’s.
Meanwhile, a pair of Western players were honoured for their outstanding seasons at the annual league award banquet.
First, Mark Hillier was named the league’s most valuable player and top scorer. He posted 59 points (30 goals, 29 assists) in 28 games.
Goaltender Lucas Park took home the league’s top goaltender award. He registered a 9-2 record with three shutouts, while posting a 1.82 goals against average with a .939 save percentage.
Finally, Western bench boss Mark Robinson was named the league’s top coach.
