The four-team West Coast Senior Hockey League, boasting local players from their respective communities, has been drawing large crowds in all four centres.
It appears the fans are embracing the local brand of hockey that has been both fast and physical, two things hockey fans in this region love to see.
Dylan Savoury and Jasper Dicks have been pleasant surprises for the Port aux Basques Mariners.
Savoury had a four-goal outing to lead the Mariners to a 7-5 win over the Deer Lake Red Wings, while also collecting a brace of markers in an 8-7 loss to the Corner Brook Royals.
Savoury also had a goal in regulation and in the shootout in his team’s 4-3 shootout win over the Jets to give the Mariners their first win.
Dicks, a crafty forward, had a hat trick in the 8-7 loss to the Corner Brook Royals and has been one of the team’s most consistent threats when they have the puck. He also scored in the shootout in his team’s only win — a 4-3 shootout win over the Jets Sunday at the Stephenville Dome.
Matt Colbourne has been an offensive catalyst for the Royals. He’s a sniper with good hands, evident by his two multiple-goal games — a brace in the 8-7 win over the Mariners and a two-goal performance in a 6-4 loss to the Stephenville Jets.
Timmy Caines has two goals and an assist to help Stephenville find early success, while veterans Brad Lucas (5G, 1A) and Cory Perrier (3G, 2A) have shown they still have hands for the game.
Malcolm Gale is off to a good start for the Deer Lake Red Wings with three goals and an assist, while Gary Hynes has proven to be a giving guy with four assists to his credit.
Most of the games have been decided by a goal or two and the battle for a berth in the final game is going to be interesting, with the Jets leading the way with a 3-0-1 record and the Mariners showing a 2-1 record heading into weekend play.
A change in the standings will happen Friday night when league action resumes with the Corner Brook Royals tangling with the Mariners at 8 p.m. at the Bruce II Sports Centre in Port aux Basques.
The weekend slate also includes two games Saturday night — the Red Wings renewing hostilities with the rival Royals at 7:30 p.m. in Corner Brook and the Jets battling the Mariners at 7:30 p.m. at the Bruce II Sports Centre.
