Karen Mercer records second hole-in-one at Corner Brook's Blomidon course

Many people consider 13 to be an unlucky number, but Karen Mercer would probably argue against such a thought.

Karen Mercer of Corner Brook, a member at Blomidon Golf and Country Club, recorded her second hole-in-one on June 8 on No. 13 using a 7 hybrid.

Mercer, an avid Corner Brook golfer at Blomidon Golf and Country Club, recorded a hole-in-one on No. 13 at Blomidon on June 8 while playing a round of golf with Mary Rose, one of three women she frequents the golf course with during the summer.

It was her second ace since picking up the sport 20 years ago. She recorded a hole-in-one on No. 8 back in 2011.

Mercer, using a 7 hybrid, hit the ball off the tee and watched it flying towards the green. It bounced and hit straight into the pin and dropped into the hole.

“I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting it to go anywhere near the hole,” Mercer said Thursday during a round of golf at Blomidon.

Mercer plays with three other women on a regular basis, one of them being Sheila Neilson who has two hole-in-ones to her credit as well. They love the game and have fun sharing the course with each other.

It’s been a great start to the season at Blomidon on the female side because Christine O’Brien, a Corner Brook woman who has been at the sport for 12 years, recorded an ace on No. 8 on Wednesday.

O’Brien didn’t want to be cast in the spotlight for her big shot and didn’t think it was a big deal, thinking it was just a lucky shot from a golfer who isn’t among the elite by any means.

Seeing the ball drop in the hole was a surreal moment filled with disbelief, according to O’Brien, preferred to avoid the limelight and wasn’t interested in having a photo taken of her.

“You can say that she says she’s the worst golfer in the world and if I can get one anyone else can,” O’Brien said as she burst into laughter.
