CrossFit Heavy Timber in Corner Brook has 20 members competing against hundreds of thousands of athletes from around the globe to see how their fitness levels stack up.

They are committed to completing five different workouts over five weeks with five days to complete each task and then their scores and/or times are entered in a database with all of the other competitors to see where they rank against the best Crossfit athletes in the world.

They receive a ranking on the world stage, in Canada, in their respective region and their respective Crossfit gym through the process.

The top 20 or 30, the number changes each year and this year’s number hasn’t been confirmed, according to Crossfit Heavy Timber founder and owner Dr. Matt Sabean, earn the right to compete at the regional Crossfit event and ultimately fight for a chance to make it to the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games in Wisconsin.

Sabean said there isn’t anybody in his gym going to find their way to the regional event this year or a trip to Wisconsin because there are literally thousands of Crossfit enthusiasts who are so much better because they commit their life to the sport.

He is ranked third in Newfoundland and Labrador and there are two guys on the east coast ranked higher than him and neither of them are in the upper echelons when it comes to the world stage of CrossFit.

Sabean said the competitors who find their way to regionals or CrossFit Games are typically people who have the freedom and resources to train for it because they don’t hold down a regular job.

This is what they do for a living,” he said.
