CORNER BROOK It has been 14 years since Corner Brook staged the 1999 Canada Winter Games, but the golden boy from that national spectacle is getting recognized for his stellar effort against Canada’s best.
Lee Churchill, a native of Hodge’s Cove, was the face of the 1999 Canada Winter Games after dominating the cross-country ski trails with three gold medals for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Churchill, who spent time as head coach of the provincial nordic team, will be inducted into the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame in the athlete category.
Gerry Rideout, president of the provincial cross-country ski association and long-time president of the Menihek Nordic Ski Club in Labrador City, will be inducted in the Hall of Fame in the builder category.
The two nordic ski enthusiasts will be honoured with a special induction ceremony April 12 at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.
