Top-seeded Western Building Products got the playoffs started right on Monday night by shutting out a severely undermanned Newfoundland Fasteners squad 4-0 in Game 1 of a Corner Brook Molson Men’s Broomball League best-of-three semifinal series at the civic centre.

Gary Kean scored twice in the victory, with Brandon Crewe and Mike Hawco adding the other markers.

Ian Jones recorded the shutout for the winning side, with Brandon Anderson suffering the loss for the fourth seeds.

The builders held a 1-0 edge after one period, before out-legging their shorthanded opposition in the second half to pile on three more goals.

In Game 1 of the other semifinal series, third-seeded Investors Group took the early lead with a 6-4 triumph over the second-seeded West Side Monarchs.

Cory Rideout picked up a pair of goals to aid the winning cause, while Jeremy Bishop, Johnny Pelley, Scott Wayson and Tyler Wells did the rest of the damage.

Greg Brake, Gary Park, Eric (Sticky) Young and Robert Greening replied in the defeat.

Pat Doucette earned the goaltending victory over Albert Specker.
