Corner Brook - Chad Jones of Corner Brook is one of the biggest kids in the peewee division.

And though only a peewee player, had broad enough shoulders to captain the Corner Brook Peewee A All-Stars to a silver medal at the Easter tournament.

For that and all the hard work and dedication it took to get there he was awarded the Harold Pike Memorial Award as the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association handed out awards at a year-end banquet for the peewee, bantam, midget and female divisions at the Pepsi Centre Studio Wednesday night.

The Harold Pike Memorial Award is given to the most dedicated player in the peewee division. Pike died in May of 1998, while serving as vice-president of the association.

"It means a lot," Jones said. "It was a really good experience. You have to lead by example."

Only one thing could have made the season better for the blueliner.

"We could have won, but it was a pretty good season," Jones added. "I got a lot better this year, better at skating and leadership."

Peter Ruth won the Technical Director's Award, which goes to an outstanding player in the midget division. Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association technical director Juan Strickland presented the award.

"He is a great coach and the stuff he does for minor hockey is amazing," said Ruth, suggesting his work ethic must have impressed Strickland. "Hard work is what he likes to see and if you are putting the time into it."

Ryan Meade was the first winner of the new bantam player of the year award, while Kent Building Supplies won the sponsorship award. Kristen Scott and Samantha Strickland shared the top award for the female division. The two friends could think of no other person they would rather share the award with.

Scott Walsh said winning the top goaltender award really meant a lot to him. A bantam goalie, Walsh won the award which covers all the divisions of minor hockey.

"I am glad to be recognized for all of my effort," Walsh said. "It was a very good season for me. I got to skate with Terry Billard and the western AAA team. I went to the Under-15 Atlantic Challenge Cup where we got a bronze medal. I improved a lot as an individual and as a player."
