Logan Alcock earned a split decision in his amateur boxing debut Saturday night at the Reid Centre in Mount Pearl.

The 21-year-old Grand Falls-Windsor native, who made regular trips to Brake’s Gym in Corner Brook to prepare for his debut, had a tough bout — three two-minute rounds in the 195-pound weight class — against a formidable opponent in Steve Oates of St. John’s.

Alcock has been involved with martial arts all of his life. He doesn’t mind fighting and it’s something he has done since he was young.

He had no fear going into his first fight, thinking the worst-case scenario would be going to sleep at the hands of his opponent.

“I thought it was fair because it was a pretty close fight,” Alcock said Monday. “I felt good for my first fight. I put the most pressure on him during the fight, so I think that’s why I got the decision. I was hitting him a lot harder than he was hitting me.”

It was an aggressive fight from start to finish, so Alcock knew he was in a fight, but he was happy to get the W.

His focus now shifts to his other love — kickboxing. He has a kickboxing match scheduled for May 5 in St. John’s.

He loved to fight as a child, and it appears he’s not ready to grow up just yet, because he plans to get into the boxing ring again.
