Grenfell Campus of Memorial University is hoping to improve its sport, fitness and recreation for the student population at of Newfoundland with the hiring of a new co-ordinator of competitive sport.
Kirk Durning will be filling the role, according to a prepared release.
The 2013 Presidents Task Force on competitive sport at Memorial recognized the opportunities for competitive sport at Grenfell Campus. The group recommended that Memorial build a multi-campus competitive sport model that fosters success at regional and national championship levels.
“This report reinforced for us the importance of competitive sport to both the campus and greater community,” said Mary Bluechardt, vice-president Grenfell Campus, who served as chairperson of the task force, said in the release.
In the report, specific reference was made to the hiring of a new co-ordinator of competitive sport and, with this in mind, Durning has been hired as the co-ordinator.
Durning, who holds a bachelor of science in human kinetics, said he’s committed to increasing sport offerings in both team and individual sports.
He is seeking to improve the sporting life at Grenfell by forming strategic partnerships with a number of key players in the community.
