It was a wonderful warm day on the pond for two female crews from the Humber Valley Rowing Club.
With Gerard Curtis as rookie coxswain, Team Belfor won its debut race at the 200th Royal St. John’s Regatta with a final clocking of 7:30.66 in a five-boat showdown in the Women’s Master Class under a scorching sun Wednesday in St. John’s.
Taking a seat in the winning boat with Curtis were Amy Bishop, Erin Summers, Rosanne Hicks, Krista Hansen, Denna Newman and Wendy Robinson.
Summers said it was an awesome experience to be on the water with a large crowd on hand and she was proud of her team for battling through the scorching heat.
She said the girls trained hard to prepare for the race but had no visions of being among the winning boats so they were all in good spirits at the finish line while awaiting word on their official time.
“We lost some steam coming around the turn but we powered through it,” Summers said.
Team Barry Group Inc., comprised of coxswain Jeff Griffin, Amy Barry, Sarah Rowe, Katie Alteen, Jaimie Gazley, Laurie McCarthy and Sarah Squires, won top honours in the senior female race with a final clocking of 6:14.03.
Corner Brook native Gene Noble was a member of the St. John’s-based Nautilus Master Rowers crew that placed second in the senior men’s race with a final time of 12:27.86.
