Immaculate Heart of Mary School students earn entry into provincial chess tournament

A number of students from Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Corner Brook earned a trip to the provincial chess tournament March 10 in St. John's based on their results at the western regional chess tournament held earlier this year. Those qualifying for the provincial event include, from left (front) Jack Watton (bronze Grade 3), Allister MacDonnell (silver Grade 4), Uriah Cull (silver Grade 3), Fabian Ryan (gold Grade 1) and Hunter Olmstead (silver Grade 1); (back) Daley Merrigan (gold Level 1), Jacob Cull (Qualifier Grade 5), Candace Johannesen (silver Grade 5) and Noah Wall (qualifier Grade 3).

Several students from Immaculate Heart of Mary School know their way around a chess board.

A total of nine students had success at the western regional chess tournament to earn the right to participate in the provincial chess tournament March 10 in St. John’s.

Daley Merrigan and Fabian Ryan highlighted the medal wins for IHMS students.

Merrigan won gold in Level 1, while Fabian Ryan nabbed silver for Grade 1 students.
