Forsey, a former provincial high school running champion, is a member of the West Virginia University cross-country running team.
Forsey, sidelined for most of 2015 because of injury, was named the 2016 Big 12 Women’s Cross-Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year at West Virginia University.
She earned runner-up finishes at both the 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals and the Big 12 Championship in her best season since heading to the United States to run against elite competition.
Sarah Davis of Paradise, a member of Canada’s national women’s hockey team, and baseball player Heather Healey of Paradise are the other finalists for senior female athlete of the year.
The only other award finalist from the west coast of the province is Corner Brook’s Denise May, who is one of three tireless volunteers in the running for the Frank W. Graham Memorial Award for Volunteer of the Year.
May, who is leaving Corner Brook next month to take on a new job in Victoria, B.C., has been the driving force behind the growth of Saltos Gymnastics Club in Corner Brook for the past number of years.
Under May’s leadership, Saltos has a new home, membership has grown by leaps and bounds, and the club boasts four full-time and 20 part-time coaches who help direct a program that has more than 700 members, both youth and adult.
The winners will be announced at the ninth annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala on April 8 in St. John’s.
