Katie Colbourne likes to have fun in the pool, but she’s all business when it’s time to work

She’s somewhat of a social butterfly at the age of 10. She’s chatty and always smiling.

But, when it comes to getting down to business, Hamlyn only has to say ‘eyes and ears to me’ and he has Colbourne’s attention.

Hamlyn welcomes sSeeing young swimmers have fun and he encourages it among the young swimmers under his tutelage.

“You want them to have fun and if you can sneak hard work into the middle of it, and then a bit of fun at the end, they forget how hard they work,” Hamlyn said.

Katie admits that she is somewhat of a jokester in her group, but she is serious about the sport because she wants to beat her own times and hopes to get qualifying times for provincial championships this year.

She figures if she works hard then anything is possible, but she doesn’t put any pressure on herself.

“I like that you have to work for your goals and you have to work hard to reach them,” Katie said.

She shares a passion for the sport with her 15-year-old sister Megan, who has became one of the most promising swimmers in the Rapids family.

That makes it much more enjoyable, so time will tell if she can accomplish what her older sister has.

“She always cheers for me when I swim and wishes me good luck,” she said.

And she already knows she can’t lose if she has fun.
