Local cross-country skiers holding their own at nationals

They’re not quite collecting the gold medals of provincial teammate Patrick McIlroy, but Hugh Warkentin and John St. Croix are posting some pretty good times at the Haywood 2016 Ski Nationals in Whitehorse, YK.

In their most recent races on Tuesday, Stephenville’s St. Croix placed 36th out of 84 racers in the junior B 7.5-kilometre freestyle race with a two-lap time of 19:58.8, which was 1:53.4 off the gold-medal time of Ontario’s Aidan Kirkham.

Corner Brook’s Warkentin, meanwhile, finished 30th out of 69 skiers in the juvenile B 7.5-km freestyle event, thanks to a two-lap total time of 20:56.1. That was 2:10.3 behind the top time set by Ontario’s Malcolm Thompson.

On Sunday, Warkentin had a strong showing in the juvenile B 5-km classic race, placing 16th out of a field of 71, clocking in at 16:05.7 for his two laps, 1:58.3 off the pace set by British Columbia’s Remi Drolet.

St. Croix managed a 40th place finish out of 88 racers in the junior B 10-km classic, with a 30:54.6 time. That was 3:12.4 behind winner McIlroy, who races out of the Avalon Nordic club.

The opening day of competition on Sunday saw Warkentin and St. Croix team up for a 42nd place finish out of 50 teams in the Challenge Boys 2x3 laps (1-km each) classic sprint relay. St. Croix had a first lap of 2:40.270; a second lap of 2:41.755; and a third lap of 2:45.060. Warkentin put up a time of 2:45.830 in lap one; 3:00.655 in lap two; and 3:30.300 in lap three. McIlroy and clubmate Noah Taylor won gold with a team total of 14:26.808.

Action resumes today at the Whitehorse Nordic Centre.
