He achieved personal best lifts in bench press (247 pounds) and deadlift (451 kg) as Special Olympians from across the province converged on the capital city for some fun and friendly competition with smiles on their faces win or lose.
The event served as qualifier for the provincial Special Olympics team that will be competing at the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Antigonish, N.S.
Mandy Simms became the first ever female SO powerlifter from the province when she made her debut in St. John’s. She managed to come up with a solid effort with a double combination of 87.5 kilograms with a bench press of 27.5 kg and a deadlift of 60 kilograms.
