A fun time on the softball diamond with family and friends has been a tradition for Peter Maher for 49 years.
Maher, a Corner Brook native, was one of the organizers of the first Memorial Sweet Pee Softball Tournament and he’s been busy this week getting things ready for another one this weekend with 11 teams in two divisions looking for bragging rights.
The Memorial Sweet Pee is held every summer and has served as a fundraising venture for families of players who played in the tournament over the years and have since passed away.
No matter what the format or the calibre of play at each event, Maher said it’s always been about having fun and he doesn’t expect it to be any different this time around.
“It’s all about having fun. Nobody takes it really serious and a lot of people look forward to it every year,” Maher said.
Tournament action in both A and B division gets underway Friday night 6 p.m. with B Division round-robin games being played at Fred Basha Memorial Park and A Division round-robin games scheduled for the Monarchs Complex. There are a handful of games from both divisions being played at Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial during the three-day tournament.
