ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) will soon have a new executive director for the first time in nearly three decades.

Judy Byrne was recently named to the role and will replace Bill Murphy after he retires in December.

Byrne has served as the technical director for the provincial association for the past nine years.

The Placentia native was a standout at Memorial University varsity women’s program in the early 1990s before moving to the United States after her education, returning to the province in 2007.

In a release, NLBA president Tom Warren said Byrne is very familiar with the organization’s goals and objectives.

“Judy will make a perfect executive director as she has been groomed for this position over the last few years,” he said.

Murphy has been the NLBA’s executive director for the past 29 years.
