The Caribou Curling Club’s Will Butler rink sits in first place of the U16 men’s division after the opening day of the provincial U18 and U16 male and female curling championships on Wednesday on home ice in Stephenville.
The Butler rink — also featuring Jacob Hatcher, Cole Hulan, Andrew Roberts and Nathan Gallant — picked up an 8-3 decision over the Alex Kingsley rink of St. John’s in action from the second draw.
Earlier in the day, the Butler crew scored an 11-2 win against the Thade Flood rink of St. John’s.
A fellow Caribou Curling Club team skipped by James Lewis didn’t fare quite as well, dropping their first two games.
Joined by Ashton Hall, Sean Vermaak and Jonathan Sacrey, Lewis fell to Flood 4-2, after an earlier defeat at the hands of Mitchell Goulding of Labrador City by a 10-3 count.
Action resumes 9 a.m. today.
