Shamrocks’ Brittany Costello, left, and Veitch Physiotherapy’s Karen Kennedy battle for the ball during women’s soccer action Monday night at Wellington Street Sports Complex.
It was essentially a consolation match, but the Shamrocks could likely take little solace in a 5-0 defeat to Veitch Physiotherapy on Monday night at Wellington Street Sports Complex.
Janine Gillis, Karen Kennedy, Jennifer Lombard, Kelsey Kent and Suzanne Carey all got on the scoresheet for the victors in the Corner Brook Women’s Soccer League’s fifth-place game.
Lombard got the game started right for the physio club by scoring in the very first minute of play, which set the tone for the rest of the night for the Shamrocks.
Gillis made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, the only other goal of the first half.
Kennedy was next on the board, in the 74th minute, to give her side the 3-0 edge. Two quick goals followed in the game’s final four minutes — Carey’s in the 86th and Kent’s in the 88th.
In action from the actual playoff round on Sunday night, the Under-18s surprised the Shoppers Drug Mart Hawks with a 1-0 triumph at Wellington Street Sports Complex.
Rebecca Sherstobetoff was the game’s only goalscorer, striking in the 44th minute.
The Under-18s now advance to play Clancy’s Pub on Thursday night, with a spot in the championship game against the Island Orthotics Curling Rangers on the line.
