Allen helps provincial team to 1-1-1 record in showcase soccer tourney

Newfoundland and Labrador showed they can compete on the Atlantic Canada soccer stage in the Under-18 age bracket.

The province’s men’s team, which includes Corner Brook native Ethan Allen, posted a 1-1-1 record at the 2015 Under-18 Atlantic Soccer Showcase tournament in Halifax over the weekend.

Allen and company wrapped up the tournament Sunday morning with a 3-0 loss to New Brunswick.

The provincial men’s contingent opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Prince Edward Island with Yamen Shahwan scoring the game’s only goal. Conner Symonds supplied the goal in a 1-1 stalemate against host Nova Scotia on Day 2.

Known more for his defensive prowess, Allen didn’t figure in the scoring line as the only player from the west coast named to either of the provincial U18 soccer squads.

Things went even better for the provincial Under-18 females, who posted an undefeated 2-0-1 record in a showdown against the top teams of the other three Atlantic provinces.

The girls wrapped up  the tournament with a 6-2 win over New Brunswick Sunday as Holly O’Neill notched a hat trick to lead the charge for the winning side. Jenny Bent, Nicole Torraville and Anna Aucoin also scored for the victors.

Torraville was the lone marksman for the girls in a 1-1 draw against Nova Scotia on Day 2, while O’Neill had all three goals in a 3-1 triumph over Prince Edward Island in the tournament opener.
