The Western Kings sweep St. John’s Maple Leafs in weekend series

The Western Kings pushed their undefeated streak to 16 games with a pair of wins over the weekend.

The wins give them a perfect 16-0 record more then midway through the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League season.

The Kings got late goals from Adrian Ward and Brayden Ryan to give them a 7-5 victory over the St. Johns Maple Leafs at the Corner Brook Civic Centre on Saturday night.

The back-and-forth affair saw Western jump out to a 2-1 lead in the first off of goals by Andrew Antle and Jonathan Anderson. In the second frame, the Leafs scored three consecutive times to go up 4-1, before Liam Smith and Adrian Ward pulled the Kings and Leafs even at four goals apiece heading to the third.

The teams traded early goals in the period to set up the dramatic finish. Liam Smith had the fifth goal for the Kings.

With 21 seconds left in the game, Ward scored and Ryan followed with an empty net marker just before the buzzer.

Kirklin Young got the start in goal for the Kings.

On Sunday, Western again overcame a two-goal deficit to stun the Leafs 5-3. The Kings were down 3-1 heading into the third before scoring four times in the final period to give them win no. 16.

Liam Smith Adrian Ward, Brayden Ryan, Andrew Antle, Drew Langdon and Skyler Coates had the goals for Western.

Meanwhile, Lucas Park got the win between the pipes.

The Kings welcome the Tri-Pen Osprey for a weekend set Nov. 04-05 in Corner Brook.
